Castelsardo

The town of Castelsardo was founded around 1100 by the Dorias. The mediavale fortified town was used to control the coast and the surrounding territory. The economy of the town was originally based on fishing and agriculture and has evolved thanks to its tourism-oriented vocation.
In the town it is worth visiting the medieval castle where there is the "Museo dell'intreccio Mediterraneo". The museum is opened all day and exposes local crafts objects. Near the Castello is the historic center and the communal house with a Gothic gate and the church of Santa Maria where there is the Black Christ (mo Criltu Nieddu). It is also worth visiting the Cathedral of Sant' Antonio Abate built during the sixteenth century where you can admire the retablo of "Master of Castelsardo" unknown artist of the fifteenth century. Inside the cathedral it is not to be missed the altars and choir.
The beaches of Castelsardo
At the entrance of Castelsardo, immediately after the harbour is the beach of Castelsardo. The other more crowded beaches are Lu Bagnu, 3 km from the town. La Vignaccia, sandy beach and Pedra Ladda, so called because of the green reef. Nearby is also the beach of Portu La Rena. The most beautiful and famous is certainly Cala Ostina. Accessible only through a dirt road it is certainly worth the inconvenience for its beauty.
