The Asinara

The Island of Asinara is located within walking distance from the famous beach La Pelosa and it is the continuation of the peninsula Nurra. It was already known in Roman times who called if Island Herculis. It was the reference point for sailors that going from Spain to Rome had to face the dangerous waters of the Strait of Bonifacio. In the Middle Ages it was populated by families of Sardinian shepherds dedicated to the custody of the flock and Ligurian fishermen who occupied traps along the coast. Since 1885 the state decided to establish an openair penal colony. The island was banned to the inhabitants and expropriated. In 1976 the government decree the landscape importance of the islance and since 1997 it was established the National Park of the Asinara. Famous for its beaches and the crystal clear waters, for unspoiled natural beauty and for white donkeys who still live free in the lands of the island.
